To begin our unit on poetry, we will begin with a focus on the “speaker.” As you’ve read in the textbook, the “speaker” is the persona (whether real or imagined) through which the poet conveys ideas. Keep in mind that the “speaker” or narrator in a poem is not necessarily the same as the poet, even though there are often parallels between the two.
