SOME IDEAS TO ANSWER THE QUESTION

A nursing theory effective in managing patient care is Madeleine Leininger’s Cultural Care Theory. Madeleine was a strong Defensor of the idea that “cultural competency improved nursing practice.” Madeleine was correct in her perception because the nurse needs to understand her patient to provide adequate care. The health care setting can be a scary environment for the patient due to sickness, anxiety about the next step, the diagnosis, the treatment. (Grand Canyon University (Ed), 2018)

In the Rehabilitation System, the nurse is the center in coordinating and implementing the nursing plan of care. The cultural care theory is critical to succeeding in meeting the patient’s goals. The rehabilitation nurse’s primary goal is to help the patient gain central independence to perform daily living activities safely. In the rehabilitation environment, the patient costumes and tradition are significant for recovery and discharge planning. When the patients go home, the family members will continue with the care. Sometimes the patients must take care of themselves because they do not have a caregiver.

The rehabilitation process in a Cuban American patient can be challenging. Most Cuban Americans are highly educated. They show different traits than other South American countries. They have a massive family support system that takes decisions with the patient regarding care. The older male in the family has the last word related the patient care. The Spanish language is the primary tool for communication in combination with emphatic gestures and loud voices. Cuban Americans are very resistant to English. Even if they speak perfect English, they might request services in their first language or an interpreter.

Cuban Americans perceive the disability; differently it can be “poor prenatal care,” “the punishment for a past sin.” (Brice, 2002) The patient’s perception of their illness is the key to develop an appropriate treatment plan. The rehabilitation nurse should consider a family-client rehabilitation model for a Cuban American patient.

In conclusion, the patient’s understanding, which includes beliefs, behavior, and thoughts, will increase the quality of the nursing care actions and decisions. The nurse should negotiate and accommodate the patient cultural requirements to develop an appropriate nursing plan of care that meets the patient’s goals. (Grand Canyon University (Ed), 2018)
