Effective communication is essential in any given situation, It needs to be held the hightest in the medical field to avoid errors. Last week, I had a Ukrainian woman who could not speak or read english. I have always worked at a hospital base facility or facilities that had translators. My supervisor who onlyhad two months experience in this
setting said there was no translator. The client was pointing to her throat. I said thyroid. She nodded her head for a yes response. She attempted to say medication. I assumed she was on thryoid medications. She could not
understand difference between hyperthyroidism or hypothyroidism. I was unable to use my phone because of a
lack of internet connection. I went into the security area and was able to get the client consent for treatment
translated in Ukraine. When I got back to the nurses area, I started rambling. Boom! There was a paper for a list of
translators covered up behind another paper. The supervisor was not to friendly of a translator being provided. We
both neither had worked correctional before. I took a oath to treat people with care regardless of looking at their
background. She say inmate. I say client. There was a difference in the way we communicated to each other and
the way care was done. Just this week, I changed my traveling assignment. I could not get approval for treatment
of clients who needed it the most. The medical doctor visited on Tuesday and overheard a conversation I was
having with the supervisor. Luckily for these two clients they will get the care they need. The supervisor considered
my communication a way of catering or babying to those who had done a wrong. I personal feel if you put three
people behind a door in the same casual cloths you could not tell whose the criminal and whose not. In any other
settings, part of the job is about education, rehabilitation and wellness. Communicating about the disease, signs and
symptoms, treatments, procedures/tests and planning is all part of nursing. Rehabilitation is communicating ways in
prevention and understanding. Wellness is treating the holistic person to alleviate, decrease or prevent
complications. All these things can be done through effective communication.
