Intended Audience
You are writing for your classmates and your instructor. Since not all of us will have read the poem you are analyzing, please remember to think about what important information about the story needs to be conveyed to your readers.
Formal Requirements
Your final draft should not be longer than 4 double-spaced pages, or about 1000 words. Your first draft should be as close to this length as possible. It is always easier to change and move things around than to add too much later. You do not need to do any additional research for this essay, but you must treat the short story at the center of your analysis an an external source. Thus, you must cite it using the MLA style. Format your whole essay in MLA. The poem you are reading for this paper is your “source,”so that story needs to be cited in the paper using the MLA style.
Task, Process, and Suggested Structure of the Paper
The following structure for the paper is suggested. This structure is not meant as a “formula for an A,” but rather as a guideline to get you started.
- Mention the poem you are reading and the technique you chose
- Explain the reading technique you are using
- Discuss the poem you chose applying that techniques.
After you have submitted the first draft, you will receive feedback from me and your classmates, though peer review. You will then revise your draft based on that feedback and submit it.
