Issues –

1. Teacher begins class without addressing the issues in the classroom such as students on their cellphones, with headphones on, talking amongst each other, and some sleeping. Students were rude when asked to answer questions related to the presentation.

2. Powerpoint presentation is poorly done ( too much information per slide, Font is too small, Difficult colors to read from) The teacher doesn’t know her information; she just reads off the slides instead of having only the key points on the slides.

3. Student arrives late to the classroom and the teacher decides to be rude to him and sarcastic in front of the entire classroom.

4. Teacher’s attitude is unprofessional when addressing the entire classroom.

Solutions-

1. Teacher needs to address classroom issues prior to starting her presentation. Let the students know that electronics aren’t permitted, ask students to stop talking, and to pay attention to the subject discussed in the classroom.

2. The Powerpoint should just include the key points of the subject, the teacher should know her presentation before coming to the classroom, and make sure to be dynamic and interactive with students and keep them interested. Presentations should engage students, change the monotone voice, and have more enthusiasm while presenting.

3. Address student issues privately and not in front of the classroom. Keep it professional.

4. Address the attitude, the teacher needs to maintain a professional attitude while still being the authority. Address student behaviors while still being respectful.

This week, you will be discussing student misconduct and incivility in the classroom and clinical environments, as well as actions that can be taken to reduce disruptive behavior to the learning environment and maintain a harmonious, cooperative, and safe atmosphere. When considering student conduct, it is helpful to gain an understanding of a problem or disruptive behavior, recognize the warning signs of student misconduct, know proactive response strategies, and make effective use of campus resources.

Incivility is any kind of speech or behavior that is disruptive, disrespectful, or rude to others. It is distracting and disruptive to the instructor and/or students, derails the goals for learning, and can cause conflict and stress in a learning environment. In higher educational contexts, incivility is commonly grouped into one or more of the following categories, although categorical labels vary: annoying acts, administrative violations, criminal conduct.

Uncivil behaviors can also be grouped into less serious behaviors such as annoyances, and more serious behaviors such as hostility, threats, and violent, or criminal behavior.

Incivility can be demonstrated by students or faculty. Examples of less serious incivility by students include:

  1. Sleeping in class
  2. Dominating a discussion
  3. Strolling into class late or leaving class early
  4. Talking to others in person or on a cell phone during class
  5. Acting bored or not interested
  6. Challenging the instructor’s knowledge or credibility
  7. Groaning or sighing
  8. Poor hygiene

Examples of more serious incivility by students include:

  1. Disorderly conduct
  2. Intimidation, harassment, or stalking (in person or electronically)
  3. Cheating, plagiarism, or other academic violations
  4. Physical or verbal abuse or attacks
  5. Alteration or misuse of any academic document, record, or identification
  6. Unjustified complaints or unwarranted feedback on instructor’s evaluation
  7. Threats against self or others
  8. Substance abuse
  9. Theft
  10. Possession of firearms

Examples of incivility by faculty include:

  1. Arriving to class late
  2. Running through lectures or instructions at a fast pace
  3. Failure to respond to or recognize student questions
  4. Little or no student involvement or interaction
  5. Requiring unanticipated assessments, unreasonable due dates, unannounced assignments, or surprise exams
  6. Behaving in an aloof or distant fashion toward students
  7. Canceling or rescheduling class with little or no prior notice
  8. Conveying that students are a burden
  9. Failure to respond to student concerns in a timely or complete manner
  10. Conversing loudly with a student about a personal issue
  11. Embarrassing students by criticizing or reprimanding them in front of classmates
  12. Allowing students to belittle, ridicule, or bully classmates or the instructor, monopolize class discussions, or disrupt a class in any way
  13. Deviations from stated grading criteria
  14. Unfair and unequal student treatment (giving special treatment to some students or accommodating a student request without warrant)

Regardless of where the behavior lies on the continuum, the learning environment is clearly compromised as a result of the uncivil behavior of students
