Yet it has been found that prenatal exposure to cigarette smoke in utero is not as innocuous as was thought just a generation ago. Animal research has suggested that prenatal nicotine exposure influences the development of the neurons in the brain, which can have lifelong consequences for the child following birth (Ekblad, Gissler, Lehtonen, & Korkeila, 2010). As was discussed in your text, there are indications that maternal cigarette use during pregnancy increases the odds that the child will develop a conduct disorder, delinquency, and substance use disorders later in life (Ekblad et al., 2010). Research has now suggested that if the mother smokes 10 or more cigarettes a day, her male children will be at increased risk for premature death, while her female children, on reaching adolescence, may be predisposed toward development of a substance use disorder (Ekblad et al. 2010).
