Developmental Case Study: Shelly or Maggie

For this assignment, you’ll assume the role of a middle school guidance counselor.

Shelly is in the sixth grade at her local public middle school, where she is a new student this year. Shelly lives with her parents and has no siblings, is a very good student, and is shy and introverted. Recently, however, her parents have noticed that she is pretending to be sick in order to avoid school, which is noticeable in a student like Shelly who greatly enjoys academics; and while she is not incredibly social, she has never presented challenges in getting along with her peers and teachers before now.

Shelly reveals to her parents that she is being bullied by another student named Maggie, and wants to transfer to a different school for next year. After her parents speak to you, the school guidance counselor, you inform them that Shelly is beginning to do poorly in her classes.

You have also spent time with Maggie and her parents and discover that Maggie’s home life is wrought with neglect, stress, and emotional abuse. Both children need help — Maggie to learn to channel her stress and to get immediate guidance and support, and Shelly to bolster her confidence, speak up for herself and also get immediate guidance and support. Both girls are troubled in different ways, and for different reasons.

Your job is to mediate and to consider creative ways to help the girls; your goal should be to keep Shelly in school, or to prevent Maggie from bullying. Engage the course material in your responses and feel free to draw on your personal experiences as well. Be mindful of others’ experiences and do your best to avoid editorializing in your Initial Post and your responses. Bullying can be a sensitive topic for many people; stay aware.

For ideas on how to best approach the situation and help both girls, review the website,Stop Bullying(Links to an external site.).

Please choose one of these questions to answer and remember that you’re respondingas the school counselor. Discuss with your colleagues in class the different approaches you all have in helping support Shelly or Maggie. Discuss the best ways to repair Shelly and Maggie’s relationship so they are able to respectfully coexist at school.

Based on the research, what would you advise Shelly to do? Are there actions her parents can take to help her? What is your role in helping Shelly?
Based on the research, how would you propose to help Maggie? What is your role in helping Maggie?
