recent environmental events like oceans and volcanoes; extreme weather events such as hurricanes, fires

recent environmental events like oceans and volcanoes; extreme weather events such as hurricanes, fires, and air quality issues; geological issues such as earthquakes and erosion from hurricanes; climate and climate change issues

  1. Choose a “current event” that occurred this semester (from February 6th to June 1st, 2023) anywhere in the world that focuses on a topic we discussed in this class.
  2. Find credible resources online that discuss this topic.
  3. With your resources create a discussion post that includes the following elements:
    1. An overview of this event (usually a summary of it in one paragraph)
    2. When and where this event took place?
    3. Did this event cause damage to human property? If so, what happened?
    4. Did this event cause harm to human life? If so, what happened?
    5. Did the event cause any environmental issues? If so, what happened?
    6. How does this event relate to physical geography and/or topics we covered in this course?
  4. With this information, write at least four solid paragraphs covering the elements above. You will post this write-up in a discussion on Canvas. For more structure, please write one paragraph (at least 5 sentences) that provides a summary or overview of the event (a). Please write one paragraph (5 sentences) on how the event relates to concepts in physical geography (f). Then, for (b), (c), (d), and (e), write at least two paragraphs that discuss all these topics. That will be four paragraphs total.
  5. (Extra Credit: +2) Include a picture or map of the event or the effects of this event in your discussion.
  6. Comment on two different students’ discussion by asking questions, adding additional information about the students’ events, or posting general comments on others’ events in a constructive and polite manner. Each comment should be at least one paragraph (5 sentences each).
  7. When choosing a topic, use the criteria in #3 above as a guide. In other words, if you have enough information to provide a one paragraph summary and a one paragraph discussion on how your chosen event relates to physical geography concepts, AND you can write two paragraphs that cover the remaining points (b – e), then your topic will work! This may take some time to find this, so please start early and ask questions.
  8. To help get started and find resources, check out the following links below:

    2. The Weather Channel: https://weather.com/Links to an external site.

These resources cover a wide range of physical geography topics, such as recent environmental events like oceans and volcanoes; extreme weather events such as hurricanes, fires, and air quality issues; geological issues such as earthquakes and erosion from hurricanes; climate and climate change issues; and general geographic topics in the National Geographic website. There is a minimum of two online resources.

There are many other sources, so you don’t have to include only what’s listed above. However, do not use Wikipedia.

9. See the grading criteria below:

    1. Correctly choosing an event that occurred this semester and is connected to concepts in this physical geography laboratory course (10 points).

    3. The four-paragraph write up that includes a discussion of all elements from a – f in the proper format outlined in #3 above (20 points).
    4. Including a map or picture of the event and/or effects of the event (+2 extra credit points).
    5. Comments to other student’s discussion posts (6 points).
