Reading Raymond Carver’s story “Cathedral” “like a writer”

As should be your habit by now, comment on at least 2 of your classmates’ posts from the last thread.

Next, recall the reading techniques presented by Mike Bunn in the essay you read last time. Please read Carver’s “Cathedral” and try to apply one of those techniques to your reading. For instance consider how the structure of the story affects what you take the story to mean, or use any other strategy for reading like a writer proposed by Bunn. Post your results in about 300 words. How did the reading process go? Was it different from the way you usually read? What surprised you about the reading process and its results? If reading like a writer means understanding the author’s decisions, can you think of a place in the story where Carver could have made a different decision? Can you also think about why he did not make it? For instance, how would have that other hypothetical decision impacted our reading of the story? Hint: there is no one correct answer, I want you to imagine different possibilities.
