In this assignment, each student will produce an annotated bibliography of at least 20 published scientific articles that are germane in some manner to the student’s chosen research project.
In order to be included in the annotated bibliography, papers need not be direct tests of the variables to be in the student’s project. However, the relevance of each paper for the topic should be apparent after reading through the notes taken by the student. Examples of acceptably relevant papers might include: 1) A competing paper that directly evaluates the relationships between the variables to be tested in the student project, 2) a paper that evaluates a related set of variables, but not the exact ones to be tested by the student project, 3) an epidemiology paper discussing the prevalence or incidence of a disease state that is being investigated in the student’s project, etc. Because the relevance of papers included in the bibliography can be drawn fairly broadly, I will not accept arguments suggesting that there aren’t enough published scientific articles to support an annotated bibliography of this size.
Each article summary should begin with a full APA-style citation.
Below the citation information, students will critically evaluate the article. I will accept any summary that demonstrates an understanding of the study and a sufficient level of critical analysis. However, I generally expect analyses to include rough answers to the following questions.
1. What were the researchers examining? Why is it important to examine that topic? In what way is this paper relevant to the student’s project?
2. What was the hypothesis? Is the hypothesis logical, testable, and refutable? Does the hypothesis seem HARKed?
3. How did they test the hypothesis? Do their methods seem reasonable? Are there any design limitations that should have been addressed? Are there any obvious threats to internal validity present?
4. What were the results? Do the statistical analyses seem reasonable? What is your estimation of the effect size?
5. Do the authors make reasonable claims on the basis of the methods used and the data presented? How confident are you in the results? What is your estimation of the external validity associated with this study?
6. How do the results compare with other papers on a similar research topic?
Note that this assignment will not be graded on a complete/incomplete basis. It will be a fully graded assignment.
