Part 1
Discussion: All Americans Fought the War
Millions of Americans participated in World War II, either through the military or through newly created agencies. After reading the article from First Lady Roosevelt and the data on American participation, please pick one group of Americans to focus your discussion on. Your post should answer the following questions, but you are not limited to them:
Which group of Americans are you focusing on? Consider if this group of Americans had full civil rights in the United States at the time of the war and if not, why would this group be willing to join the war effort? What was the most important contribution to the war effort of your group?
- Address the questions asked in the paragraph above in at least a 300-word post and cite all outside sources appropriately
- In your initial post, include at least one interesting question the readings raised for you
- Reply to at least two of your classmates’ posts who selected different groups and attempt to answer their questions (100 word posts minimum)
Part 2
Discussion: The Space Race
The space race was a visual representation of the race between the Soviet Union & the United States. Review the primary sources & research on your own to answer these questions. Why was the space race so significant to the United States? How did the United States react to Sputnik? How did the leaders of our country guide the nation through this time? What is the significance of the Space Race on an emotional level? What connections do you still see to the space race today?
1. Address the questions asked in the paragraph above in at least a 300-word post and cite all outside sources appropriately
2. In your initial post, include at least one interesting question the readings raised for you
3. Reply to at least two of your classmates’ posts and attempt to answer their question (100 word posts minimum)
Part 3
Interpreting the Past: Response to Communism in the United States
One of the main jobs of historians is to interpret the past by reviewing primary documents, scholarly secondary sources, and then creating an analysis of this research. After reading your text and reviewing the assigned materials, submit an analysis of the response of politicians and the U.S. government to communism.
You might want to consider the following questions, but you are not limited to them: Why were Americans concerned there might be Soviet spies in the United States? How did McCarthy respond? Did President Eisenhower support McCarthy’s actions? What led to McCarthy’s downfall? The release of the Venona Papers in the 1990s revealed that there were, in fact, communist spies who had infiltrated the U.S. government, did this vindicate McCarthy? What other connections can you make to this issue across the decades?
This assignment should be at least 300 words and contain your reactions or questions about some specific issue within the historical narrative which you find compelling. Paper must not simply sum up the reading or repeat points made there. Rather, I’m looking for you to create your own interpretation, explain the emotional content of the piece, or discuss some original insight. Include citations as needed.
