Scenario

Let’s welcome back Mr. Franklin, a collaborating educator from Anywhere School District. You’ve worked with Mr. Franklin in ESE601 Educating Students with Exceptionalities (a prerequisite to this course), getting to know him and several students throughout your coursework. As a special education professional, you receive the following email from Mr. Franklin relating to a student you both support, Maryam Ghazali.

From: Mr.Franklin@anyschool.edu
Date: Today
Subject: [blank]

Dear Special Educator,

I am very excited for our upcoming unit in math next week. I recently sat in on a webinar on place-based and project-based learning. They called it PBL2. Sounds interesting, right? Since we work in an urban area, and many of our students live in apartments with very little green space, I thought it would be cool to create a garden based on the concepts we have introduced in mathematics. I think Maryam G. will appreciate this because, just last week, she was telling me that she was annoyed that there were not any parks in her neighborhood where she could go spend time with her cousins.

I would love your feedback. Since you are the expert in the field of special education, I am not sure how to incorporate a differentiation section based on Maryam’s needs and those other students who have Individualized Education Program (IEP) goals in the classroom. Do we have to?

I just finished my last period prep time and I am ready for the weekend. I wanted to talk to you before the weekend, but we must have missed each other. As we will be teaching this on Monday, I probably should have reached out earlier. Help!

Thanks,
Mr. Franklin
