Identify your second video and describe your observations from the video that are relevant to classroom management and student
In this task and others in this program, you will use Gibbs’s reflective cycle (Gibbs, 1988) as a framework to respond to observations and experiences. Gibbs’s reflective cycle encourages you to think systematically about the phases of an experience or activity, first describing the experience, then addressing how it made you feel, next evaluating and analyzing it, then drawing a conclusion, and finally considering how this experience will apply to your future practice.
This task will focus on strategies for managing engaging learning environments, including motivation and engagement strategies. An essential part of learning to manage a learning environment is observing what other teachers do and reflecting on your observations using theory or evidence-based practices.
For this task, you will observe three video lessons and reflect on your observations of strategies the teachers in the video lessons used for classroom management and make connections to theory and evidence-based practices.
A. Select a video to watch from the attached “Task 2 Video List,” and reflect on the lesson in the selected video by doing the following:
1. Identify your first video and describe your observations from the video lesson that are relevant to classroom management and student engagement by including the following:
· elements of the learning environment (e.g., classroom layout, learning materials)
· the teacher’s actions
· the students’ behavior and engagement
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the teacher’s strategies for classroom management and student engagement in the video by doing the following:
a. Explain how effectively the teacher designed the learning environment to support classroom management and student engagement in the lesson.
3. Describe a strategy you would use to motivate and engage each of the following students in this lesson, using theory or effective classroom management practices to support your strategies:
a. an English learner
b. a student who is withdrawn and uninterested in lesson content
Note: Strategies described in part A3 do not need to have been observed in the video.
B. Select a second video to watch from the attached “Task 2 Video List,” and reflect on the lesson in the selected video by doing the following:
1. Identify your second video and describe your observations from the video that are relevant to classroom management and student engagement by including the following:
· elements of the learning environment (e.g., classroom layout, learning materials)
· the teacher’s actions
· the students’ behavior and engagement
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the teacher’s strategies for classroom management and student engagement in the video by doing the following:
a. Explain how effectively the teacher managed student behavior, using theory or effective classroom management practices to support your explanation.
3. Describe a strategy you would use to motivate and engage each of the following students in this lesson, using theory or effective classroom management practices to support your strategies:
a. a student who is easily distracted and disrupts the learning of others
b. a student who has already mastered the content of the lesson
Note: Strategies described in part B3 do not need to have been observed in the video.
C. Select a third video to watch from those provided in the attached “Task 2 Video List,” and reflect on the lesson in the video you select by doing the following:
1. Identify your third video and describe your observations from the video that are relevant to classroom management and student engagement by including the following:
· elements of the learning environment (e.g., classroom layout, learning materials)
· the teacher’s actions
· the students’ behavior and engagement
2. Evaluate the effectiveness of the teacher’s strategies for classroom management and student engagement in the video by doing the following:
a. Explain how effectively the teacher actively engaged all students in learning, using theory or effective classroom management practices to support your explanation.
3. Describe a conflict management strategy you would use to maintain a safe and productive learning environment during this lesson for each of the following examples, using theory or effective classroom management practices to support your strategies:
a. Two students had a verbal disagreement before class. Their disagreement continues during this lesson, and they make antagonistic comments to each other that you (the teacher) and other students can hear.
b. A student comes to class in an agitated mood. This student makes challenging comments to you (the teacher) such as “Leave me alone” and “This is stupid” after you give reasonable instructions for participation.
Note: Strategies described in part C3 do not need to have been observed in the video.
D. Acknowledge sources, using in-text citations and references, for content that is quoted, paraphrased, or summarized.
