Overview
The United Nations has continued to retain you as a consultant for a project that deals
with climate and the environment. Most developed countries see the dangers of
releasing too much carbon dioxide into the atmosphere and are committed to climate
policies that attain a carbon-free future in the next 30 years. They already see the
damaging effects that this gas alone is having on the living conditions of crops, wildlife,
and humans. As a result, many member states are dissatisfied with the progress of the
eight Millennium Development Goals for international development that they established
in 2000.
The member states see a substantial disconnect between several issues that developed
and developing countries believe are priorities. For example, Burundi wants one of the
goals to focus on food security, while Austria is adamant that a major global issue
should be the negotiation of ceasefires in countries during civil wars.
The UN wants you to work from the list below and prioritize two of the global
community’s threats that it deems the most serious to environmental stability.
Instructions for research and writing this assignment:
Step 1 Select two (2) threats of the 8 threats: Listed Below. The following eight
threats are issues that the United Nations Council believe to be the most serious to
global security. Some of these threats apply to the Earth’s 7.7 billion people, while
others are limited primarily to developing countries. Regardless of where these threats
are concentrated, your job as a consultant is to identify two of them that you consider
the most critical to the globe’s population.
Eight (8) Issue Options
1. The use of fossil fuels as an energy source.
3. Insufficient educational opportunities in developing countries.
4. A lack of access to technology.
5. Civil war in a developing country, (NOT the U.S. Civil War).
6. The rise in oceans’ levels.
7. Covid-19 and the global pandemic. (Use factual science-based information).
8. The dangers of poor countries (not continents) remaining poor (be specific—choose
at least two factors that negatively impact global conditions associated with persistent
poverty)
Step 2 Total page count for this assignment is 10 pages. Class, this means that
your paper will contain a Title page, a Reference/Source page, 8 pages of
research material (content) this includes a full page dedicated to a graph or
statistical table indicating information about one threat. If anyone does not
understand the page requirements of this assignment, please contact me.
Your paper will contain 7 (seven) pages of well researched information and the 1
(one) page graph/table about your two threats. Please provide a brief description
about the table/graph and cite the source. You may copy and paste the
graph/table into the body of your paper.
Again, this gives you a total of eight (8) pages of researched information. This is
NOT an opinion-based paper, you may offer your personal thoughts in the
Discussion/Summary section, however, all information must be fact-based from
reliable and credible academic sources.
Please select one developing country (from Week 6) or choose another
developing country (for at least one of your two threats). You may choose from
the World Bank List of Developing Countries (see Course Information in
BlackBoard). NOTE! Class, do not choose the continents of Africa, Asia or other
continents as a threat subject for this paper, you cannot adequately address any
continent in this assignment.
Write an introduction paragraph of at least one-half page in length identifying the
two threats you have selected and the purpose of the paper. Then, for the two threats
you chose:
1. Identify the factors that make it such a serious risk to the global environment that you
would choose to present it to the UN
2. Analyze the role that humans have played in aggravating this threat to the Earth’s
environment.
3. Suggest initiatives that the global community can take to mitigate the worst effects of
this environmental threat.
4. Write a conclusion paragraph of at least one-half page in length that summarizes
your impressions of these risks for global stability.
Guidelines
1. This course requires the use of Strayer Writing Standards (SWS). For assistance
and information, please refer to the SWS link in the SOC 450 course and check
with your professor for any additional instructions.
2. To earn full credit, the answers to each of the two threats that you have selected
must be complete, substantial and presented using credible academic research sources
(Strayer University Library Research database, SOC 450 course and/or other academic
sources).
3) You must include a current graph or table (see 5, below), one page in length.
4) Include a properly formatted Title page, and
5) Include a complete Source/Reference page.
The entire paper will be a minimum of eight pages of content material. Do not
include the actual instructions questions, use a few words from the questions (to
indicate the topic or threat) as a sub-heading label. Clearly LABEL (HEADING)
each section and provide proper formal paper formatting (paragraphs etc.)
Check the grammatical organization of your paper (sentence structure, spelling
etc.) Do not list information (as in a memo), you must write all information in
complete sentences.
Poorly written and formatted papers often receive major point reductions
because the information is hard to read, grammatically incorrect (subject-verb
agreement issues, sentence fragments, run-on sentences, wordy sentences,
overuse of similar words, excessive spelling errors, etc.) and void of sufficient
paragraphing and line spacing. It is advisable to use the GRAMMARLY writing
program or another program that will assist with grammatical and organizational
structures for this paper.
3. You must use at least seven current credible sources (do not include Wikipedia,
dictionaries, and encyclopedias) that are appropriate for the subjects under discussion.
Do not use Wikipedia or Wiki sources, or blogs! Reference sources should not
be older than 7 years.
4. Use only double-spacing and not place extra spacing between paragraphs or section
headings.
5. As part of your answer to any one of the questions, you must include a graph, table
or chart using quantifiable data that supports your argument. You need only one
(1) graph for the entire assignment, and although you may download this item
from the Internet, it may be no longer than one page in length.
You must explain and provide an intext citation beneath the graph (what the data
or graph information means) otherwise, it will be of no use to the reader.
