OVERVIEW OF ASSIGNMENT:

For this assignment, you will find an academic article related to your topic from a peer-reviewed, academic journal. The purpose of this assignment is to help you discover what the academic research teaches us about your social problem and to help you learn how to read and understand academic articles. In Module 9, you will complete an assignment that will require you to have four sources from academic articles. The article you use for this assignment can be used for that assignment as well. The information you learn in this assignment will also be useful when you write your research paper.

Pick an article from a peer-reviewed academic journal. You can use the BYU Sociology Library Research Guide (Links to an external site.) to help you find an article. I would suggest using one of the three main sociological databases listed there. When you search for your article, be sure to check the Peer-Reviewed box. To complete this assignment, you will need to look at the whole article, not just the abstract. Then complete the attached template to tell us about your article.

For this paper, I do not want you to use any direct quotes from the article. Instead, I want you to tell me the information and summarize it in your own words. Be aware that you probably will not understand everything in the article. That is okay. You are not supposed to be an expert in this area right now. You should, however, be able to pull the main ideas out of the article and understand the basics of what research was done, even if you don’t understand the specific statistics and technical aspects of the study.

INSTRUCTIONS:

For this assignment you will need to complete the following steps:

  1. Cite your article in APA format using APA helps.
  2. Explain the research question they were asking (what were they trying to understand, explain, or discover?).
  3. Write a paragraph or a few sentences explaining how this research fits into past research. Why is this research important? How is different than what has been done in the past? This information is usually found towards the beginning of the article.
  4. Write paragraph or a few sentences explaining how they conducted their research.
  5. Write a paragraph or a few sentences explaining their findings.
  6. Write two sentences telling us what you think are the most important things you learned from the article.
  7. Use the provided template to complete your assignment: I WILL PROVIDE BOTH A TEMPLATE AND an EXAMPLE OF WHAT THE ASSIGHNMNET SHOULD CONSIST OF (example is only used for reference)

REQUIRMENTS: Your paper should meet the following requirements:

  • 1–2 pages, double-spaced
  • Times New Roman font (or a close equivalent) with a type size of 12
  • 1-inch margins
