For example, how did the Cold War affect the Southwest? How did World War II affect the Southwest?
One of the tasks of historians is to provide a synthesis, hopefully original, of other already researched material that reads as a historian’s own work. Some faculty do this almost every day for their lectures.
For this assignment, I want you to take on a big national topic that is covered by at least two of the key authors in this class. For example, how did the Cold War affect the Southwest? How did World War II affect the Southwest? What were the immediate impacts of the War of 1846 (the U.S. war with Mexico) on the Southwest? How did women in the Southwest experience World War II? How did Mexican communities in the Southwest respond to World Mar II?[1]
These questions are – of course – far too large and too general to be answered fully over the course of a five page paper. The challenge in the paper is going broad while being limited in your source material – the assigned readings for the class. Consider this paper the beginning of the writing of a paper on the southwest that connects to a topic of your interest. The chart below points to direct overlaps.
