I believe that the portrayal of nurses on the media does affect how patients perceive nurses. When people think of a nurse they relate it to a female, discrediting the role males also take in this role. When a male walks into a patient’s room they might not think they are as capable as a female as it is not a role a male should be in. Patients prefer female nurses if they are allowed to choose and feel uncomfortable with male nurses (Teresa-Morales, 2022)
- Discuss the various roles nurses can play that support the real image of nursing. Think about community health care and preventive services for all, but especially the underserved.
As nurses we should always be proud of the role we take in the community. Nurses can play a role in supporting the real image of nursing by maintaining a professional image. Become a community leader is another way a nurse can help support the real image of nursing. Become involved in community organizations, particularly those related to health care issues (Paton, 2020).

Societal interpretation of nurses’ roles, responsibilities, and competency is heavily dependent on media representation (Kaszuk, 2015). Today, patients perceive nurses as subservient, lacking authority, and most likely to be women who also play the ‘naughty nurse’ (Marshall, 2021). Indisputably, media portrayals of nurses as women who are the doctor’s “handmaiden” have cultivated this perception for years, negatively affecting how patients interact with nurses (Cleary et al. 2018). The media is directly responsible for the development of negative nursing stereotypes. In this manner, this platform has proven to be an effective disseminator of information to the public. Therefore, it is only logical that stakeholders utilize these platforms to influence the public image of nursing positively. Media personnel must highlight stories showing nurses’ essential roles in the hospital and community settings. In addition, nurses must be allowed to speak directly to the public on various issues related to the public to increase their visibility and demonstrate their competence and capacity to contribute to improved population health (Marshall, 2021).
However, nurses must also play an active role in positively impacting the societal interpretation of their roles, competency, and professionalism. These professionals must take charge in their domains and be visible in fulfilling their responsibilities. Recent studies show that nurses are highly unlikely to feature in newspaper articles, magazines, and industry articles (Mason et al., 2018). These professionals must actively work towards becoming visible by creating scholarly reports and pushing for their visibility in the media (Marshall, 2021). In addition, nurses must launch a concerted effort targeting underserved communities such as the homeless. These campaigns can also address the risk of hepatitis and HIV/AIDS among drug users. Nurses can use these opportunities to help the community while improving the public image of the nursing career.
