Yes, bullying or horizontal violence is a risk psychological factor in clinical settings around the world (Teo et al., 2021). The phrase “nurses eat their young” refers to experienced nurses mistreating new or inexperienced nurses (Dellasega & EBSCOhost, 2019). According to Teo et al. (2021), “Workplace bullying is a major source of psychosocial stressors”. This behavior can take many forms, including verbal abuse, humiliation, intimidation, and exclusion from meaningful conversations and opportunities for growth (Dellasega & EBSCOhost, 2019). Bullying and horizontal violence can have severe consequences for the individual nurse and the healthcare team. Bullied nurses may experience poor mental health and job satisfaction and leave the profession entirely (Dellasega & EBSCOhost, 2019). Bullying reduces collaboration and effective communication at the team level, leading to decreased productivity and insufficient work commitment (Dellasega & EBSCOhost, 2019).
Discuss how the nurse mentor can promote professional socialization in the workplace.
Nurse mentors are critical to promoting professional socialization in the workplace and preventing bullying and horizontal violence. One crucial way that nurse mentors can promote professional socialization is by creating a positive and supportive work environment, encouraging open communication and collaboration among team members, recognizing and rewarding good work, and resolving any issues or conflicts promptly and constructively (Dellasega & EBSCOhost, 2019). Nurse mentors can also model a positive attitude toward new or inexperienced nurses, provide constructive and supportive guidance and feedback, and set a positive example for other nurses on the team (Dellasega & EBSCOhost, 2019). By promoting a culture of mutual respect and support, nurse mentors can help to prevent bullying and horizontal violence and promote a positive and productive work environment for all nurses.

- Bullying is something we have all experienced beginning in childhood, either being the victim of bullying or being the bully. Our morals as humans recognize bullying as a form of abuse and is frowned upon in society, and it comes in different forms such as verbal, physical, cyber, and social bullying. Bullying is not just a childhood phenomena, it can progress into adulthood.
- I believe the phrase “nurses eat their young” to be true. It does not apply to all nurses, but there are nurses who have gratification in belittling and abusing new nurses and students. Bullying can be scarring to victims, causing them to have poor self esteem, poor confidence, and poor mental health. In the case of bullying between nurses, this problem can lead to nursing students and new nurses to dislike their environment and potentially leave the profession, which does not help with the fact there is a nursing shortage. This horizontal violence in nursing is harmful to everyone involved, including patients, and is a hazard in the nursing workforce.

- Nurses should be familiar with their facility’s code of conduct and encourage positive behaviors in the workplace. Policies often provide reportable behaviors but some nurses are unfamiliar with the policies and do not report inappropriate behaviors. Other reasons nurses do not report inappropriate behaviors are because they are either indifferent or fearful. In an interview with nurses, they have said reasons they do not report was because they do not want to be considered a snitch, that no one will help them if they complain, or that things will be worse if they report (Taylor, 2016). Mentors should be the first line between new nurses and experienced nurses to reduce and prevent horizontal violence in the nursing field. They should be the embodiment of compassion, empathy, resourcefulness, and motivation.
