Firearms and Public Health
According to the American Public Health Association, “Gun violence is a leading cause of premature death in the U.S. Guns kill more than 38,000 people and cause nearly 85,000 injuries each year” (American Public Health, 2021). Unless classified as a mass shooting, news stories involving unintentional and/or international gun-associated injuries are treated more as a nuisance, rather than a public health crisis within the United States.
As a public health professional, you are a trusted source who has decided to reside in an historically-excluded community that is dealing with the long-lasting effects associated with red-lining. In addition to an increased prevalence of violence committed with firearms, the residents within your area are dealing with complex health, environmental, and social issues (e.g., individuals with mental illness, hypertension, community blight, persons experience homelessness, etc.). With these environmental conditions in mind:
- Differentiate between the specific roles of healthcare, public health, and government with respect to firearms and potential injuries within the community. How is each system impacted by the presence and use of firearms on a daily basis?
- Examine the intersection between firearm violence and at least two complex health, environmental, or social issues (e.g., individuals with mental illness, hypertension, community blight, persons experience homelessness) present within the community. How do your chosen issues intersect with healthcare, public health work, and government?
- Demonstrate your understanding of the issues and their effects on various systems by creating a 10-15 slide PowerPoint presentation (with oral narration) designed to inform policy makers regarding firearm violence/injury in your community. Your PowerPoint presentation should include at least two suggestions as to how public health and healthcare workers, along with government, can facilitate a reduction in the prevalence of gun violence within your community.
