Considering today’s forces, trends, and issues that influence curriculum development and the changing demands in healthcare delivery, discuss how you think the nursing curricula needs to change in order to prepare nurse graduates for their future role as practicing nurses. Week 3 Introductory Reading
Today’s healthcare system is complex and rapidly changing. To remain current with these developments, education for nurses must be continually evaluated and faculty must restructure the curricula to prepare graduates for professional nursing practice. Nurse educators are responsible for keeping up with the field of education, in both theory and practice. Developing a curriculum is a major task and an ongoing process. Even after a new curriculum has been implemented, it must be monitored and assessed, outcomes must be evaluated, and modifications are usually necessary.
Curriculum decisions are not random. These decisions should be based on an educational philosophy, which is at the heart of curriculum development and guides the many choices involved in the process. Strong leadership, careful planning, and a lot of time are necessary to develop a quality curriculum that offers a cost effective and flexible program that responds to an increasingly diverse student population and the needs of the constituencies to which the institution are accountable.
Furthermore, a curriculum is not developed in a vacuum and a curriculum committee should not work in isolation. From the start, major stakeholder groups should be represented, and there are many possible groups that may be included from time to time, such as:
1) Nurse educators at all levels of the institution
2) Current and past students
3) Clinical nurse administrators or educators from the nursing program practice sites
4) Community members to ensure the needs of the community are addressed and the curriculum change is supported
The curriculum team may also include curriculum experts, subject specialists, political leaders, and representatives from the board of nursing and/or accrediting bodies.
The challenge of curriculum development is to envision the future of health care and nursing education based on evidence and best practices. Yes, the development of a new curriculum is demanding, and implementing a new curriculum is never easy. But development of a new curriculum is a powerful tool for change and an exciting time for those involved.
