Ancient Case Study 2: Class Discussion

Original Post: For your post, you need to academically reflect on the following prompt:

Prompt:

Consider the British Museum Director’s view on multicultural exhibits and their cultural message throughout the article and especially in these quotes:

“When you move cultural heritage into a museum, you move it out of context. Yet that displacement is also a creative act”

“Since the beginning of the 19th century, the monument’s history is enriched by the fact that some [parts of it] are in Athens and some are in London where six million people see them every year”

Now, remember, the article mentioned that a strong British popular base does not align with these statements. Consider the messages about multiculturalism and the British Museum’s collection from British comedian James Acaster in this clip from his piece “On the Absurdity of the British Empire.”Links to an external site.

Based on your understanding of the case and your opinion…

1) Which viewpoint on inclusion and diversity do you align with more?

2) Considering the history of the statues, who do you think legally owns them — Britain or Greece?

*For question 2 response: reference a new article / website on the background of the statues that you went to for more information

Note: You should be using the case study article Links to an external site.from the introduction question assignment as evidence to support your main points. You should also include the information for an additional academic source on the statue’s background.

Response Posts: Respond to at least one classmate and ask thoughtful questions. Feel free to build common ground and establish community connections (e.g. Nice point, I thought that too, I agree, etc.), but your responses have to go beyond this to earn full credit.
