- Consider some of common theoretical/conceptual frameworks and behavioral models often used in public health to address the different factors that were identified.
- Common theoretical frameworks and behavioral models include the theory of reasoned action, the health belief model, the theory of planned behavior, the trans-theoretical stages of change, the socio-ecological model, and the social cognitive theory of behavior change. You can find information on these theories and models in the Learning Resources. The resources also provide example of how constructs can be aligned to specific factors that influence health behaviors.
- Consider whether you can relate any of the factors in Part 1 of this Discussion to the constructs of these theories and models.
- Consider which of these are the primary factors and if they can be influenced by a public health communication campaign.
- Look at these factors and note how they may relate to the constructs of the behavioral model or theoretical framework. What is the closest match? What factors that are the most easily or readily addressed by a public health communication campaign.
- Finally, apply these thoughts to your target population as described in Part 1 of this Discussion.
- Describe the factors that you will address in your Public Health Communication Campaign (Scholar Practitioner Project).
- Describe the behavioral model or theoretical framework that is guiding your choice.
- Are you going to try and change behaviors or increase knowledge?
- If a behavior change, will it be increasing a protective factor or decreasing a risk factor?
- How would the results of the assessment of the audience help guide this decision?
- Are there indirect factors that need to be accounted for, such as environmental, societal, or policy?
- Finally, justify that your target population is the best choice given the aims of your campaign:
- Is the target population the highest “at risk” group? Are they easily reached or participating in behaviors that can be addressed in the Public Health Communication Campaign? Is their location centralized? Any of these can be appropriate justification for targeting a particular population.
