Asthma is one of the most common chronic diseases; It occurs with the narrowing and swelling of airways causing difficulty breathing and triggering, shortness of breath, coughing and a whistling sound or wheezing. Symptoms vary from person to person, for some it can be a minimal bothersome while for others it can become a limitation for basic daily activities. Common symptoms include shortness of breath, chest tightness, wheezing when exhaling. Worsening of conditions can include recurrent symptoms, increasing difficulty breathing and need to use quick relief inhaler often. Triggers may include airborne allergens such as pollen, respiratory infections, physical activity, cold air, and certain medications. For treatment, long term medications are taken regularly to keep asthma under control and prevent attacks, those include inhaled corticosteroids, leukotriene modifiers, a combination of inhalers and theophylline. Quick relief or relief or rescue medications are used for rapid relief during asthma attacks, those are Short acting beta agonists (Ventolin and levalbuterol), anticholinergic agents, oral and intravenous corticosteroids (Mayo Clinic, n.d.).

There are many financial and psychosocial implications to the diagnosis of asthma. According to Rank et al., 2019, taking into consideration the high health care costs from recurrent hospital admission and frequent emergency department visits due to asthma exacerbations, studies have reported that the appropriate use of medications and timely treatment can help reduce health care costs while improving patient outcomes and increasing the quality of life of patients and families. This can only be accomplished if patients diagnosed with asthma have proper self-management by receiving appropriate care. Out of pocket costs to adhere to treatment plans highly affects patients’ economic situation. Copayments, wage reduction from sick days due to exacerbations, and stress are other elements to take in consideration when selecting a long-term treatment option for patients (Tudball et al., 2019).

Other studies show evidence that psychosocial support is key in the treatment of patients diagnosed with asthma; the involvement of patients and family in the self-management of the disease is fundamental and it is encouraged that families become an integral part in the process of knowledge sharing and decision making when health care providers offer a treatment plan (Abreu et al., 2020).

It is important that health care providers take into consideration all the implications financial and psychosocial, when offering treatments for asthma. The success of the treatment depends on the ability to patients to self-manage and maintain realistic medication therapy.
