Hair loss can lead to emotional distress and lower self esteem. Thus, leading many to seek different potential solutions. 5-alpha reductase (5AR) inhibitors, such as finasteride are commonly utilized to stabilize and/or regrowth hair. Finasteride is a prescription medication intended to treat male pattern hair loss (MPB), also known as androgenic alopecia. It works by blocking the conversion of Testosterone to Dihydrotestosterone (DHT), a hormone that is responsible for hair loss. Finasteride is available in two forms. Taken orally and/or in a topical solution form. As a generic drug or under the brand names Proscar or Propecia. The topical solution can be applied directly to the scalp. Moreover, it bypasses the first pass metabolism of the liver and is absorbed directly into the scalp. Thus, lowering systemic exposure and decreased potential for drug interaction by decreasing the amount of drug that enters the bloodstream. Ultimately, lowering risk of side effects. Finasteride has been associated with erectile dysfunction (ED) in a fair amount of research studies. However, it should be noted that ED is not well understood or significant enough to deter men from utilizing it. Research studies have shown that the utilization of finasteride can result in short or long term changes in sexual functioning in a small percentage of men.

For MPB, finasteride can help slow down the progression of hair loss and promote regrowth of hair. It is important to note that finasteride does not work for everyone and its effects may vary from person to person. Furthermore, common side effects include decreased libido, erectile dysfunction and reduced semen volume. Hence, finasteride should only be used under the supervision of a health care provider.

Introduction:

Full disease state using article, diagnosis, impacts on health

Finasteride may impact an individual’s health in different ways. Some individuals may have an allergic reaction to finasteride and may experience symptoms such as itching, hives, or shortness of breath. If a woman is pregnant or breastfeeding, finasteride could have harmful adverse effects. It can be harmful to a developing fetus and is not recommended for women who are pregnant or breastfeeding. Finasteride can cause sexual side effects such as decreased libido , erectile dysfunction, and decreased volume of semen. The side effects may be permanent even after stopping medication. Finasteride may not be suitable for people with certain medical conditions such as prostate cancer, liver disease , or severe urinary tract problems.

Finasteride is a medication that has been approved by the US Food and Drug administration (FDA) for treatment of Benign prostatic hyperplasia and Androgenetic alopecia. Finasteride was approved by the FDA in 1992 at a dose of 1 mg. In 1997, it received approval to treat male pattern hair loss at a dose of 1mg. Finasteride was developed by Merck under the code name MK -906. In 1997, Merick was successful in obtaining FDA approval with second indication of finasteride 1 mg for treatment for male pattern hair loss.

The main competitors of finasteride include Dutasteride (brand name Avodart) a five alpha reductase inhibitor similar to finasteride. But with a wider target, as it blocks both type 1 and type 2 isoforms of the enzyme. Minoxidil (Rogaine) is a topical solution that is applied directly to the scalp, which helps increase blood flow and promote hair growth.
