A SWOT analysis is a compilation of your company’s strengths, weaknesses, opportunities and threats. A SWOT analysis is a planning process that helps your company overcome challenges and determine which new leads to pursue (Schooley, 2021),

Completing the solve the outbreak simulations was exciting. I ended up with a “masters” badge, but the journey there was sometimes with overthinking my choices. I tended to overanalyze the data and sometimes become undecided about the choices and trying to understand the epidemiological (EPI) curve. This tended to be a common thread throughout the simulation exercise. In ‘Connecting the Spots simulation for example, I had the hardest time trying to figure out if the answer to my investigating in clue #2; was it “The reason so many children are sick” or “the people who live on farms or have pets”.

In the ‘Village of Gold’ simulation, use of a SWOT analysis by the village elders and local health officers could have prevented more children from dying. The Doctors without Borders – international organization should have asked more questions using the SWOT analysis. They were aware that this is a gold mining village. Questions such as “What are possible effects caused by this activity, what is fatal enough to affect children, why are the children in the 3rd village not so involved in this activity less affected? The local health officers work in collaboration with the international body and they should have informed the federal authorities so that investigations would have already been in effect saving more lives.

In the simulation of the ‘Case of the Conference Blues’. A more proactive use of their SWOT analysis could have prevented the outbreak of E. Coli at the Atlanta conference. The ‘fingerprints’ of the bacteria E. coli O157 was found to be linked to 12 other cases that have been reported across the country in the last few weeks. However, this strain has not been reported to PulseNet before now. PulseNet is a national laboratory network of state and local public health laboratories and federal food regulatory laboratories that connects foodborne, waterborne, and One Health-related illness cases to detect outbreaks. PulseNet uses the DNA fingerprints of bacteria making people sick to detect thousands of local and multistate outbreaks. I believe that if the Epidemic intelligence services (EIS) in those other 12 cases had been reported and involved PulseNet, the outbreak in Atlanta may have been prevented as PulseNet would have traced the bacteria in good time to issue an advisory.

Hi, I really enjoyed doing the outbreak simulations. It showed me that it does not involve just one person in solving a problem, but it takes a team effort. The SWOT analytic approach can be beneficial in all the simulations because it helps reveal the unique differences in each situation along with the ones that had common symptoms of a disease process. It also reveals that it is important to include everyone in a community to help solve the problem, which could help in improving the situation in a timely manner. The SWOT analysis mostly focuses on the strength and weaknesses, opportunities and threats of situations. SWOT has four categories that are based on internal forces and external forces: which are:

  • Strengths Category Something that we can do very well today that could help us gain fast traction with skills, resources, and knowledge already in place, Weakness Category – Areas that are holding us back should be removed or improved upon with the right energy and effort. Opportunities Category These could include technology, relaxing regulations, elimination of trade barriers, and changing consumer preferences, Threats Category The emergence of new regulations, increased trade barriers, and supply chain disruption.
