Part 1: Change and sustain talk are frequently discussed in this module’s readings. How is learning to recognize these impacting your life outside of class? Do you notice yourself or your friends using change and/or sustain talk? Provide at least two examples and describe them. Do you find yourself recognizing ambivalence more easily in casual conversations or even when watching TV? How is learning about MI impacting your personal life? The goal is to identify ways in which learning the thought process behind MI is impacting your perspective.

Part 2: One of the topics discussed in the textbook was the use of metaphors with clients. The authors explain that metaphors, similes, and/or analogies can help bring concepts to life in a way that resonates with clients more than words alone can. For this discussion, come up with at least 3 situations in which you could effectively use a metaphor, simile, or analogy with a client and share one that is appropriate for each situation. Then, the authors also say that “while ‘why’ questions are open-ended, they come with caution tape. The practitioner can easily come off as condescending or judgmental.” Explain what this means and provide at least two examples where you have seen this occur.
Discussion 3,
Part 3: When working with clients, you might realize they have core beliefs that are hindering their progress in making healthy behavior changes (as discussed in Ch. 12). Identifying, exploring, and modifying these can be a delicate process and the authors note that “evoking these core beliefs about self-worth and the basic rights to feel nourished and whole must sometimes be addressed before meaningful change can occur”. Provide an example of a core belief you have had that hindered your progress and explain how or if that was resolved. Then, what apprehensions do you have as you imagine working with these clients? Identify at least three concerns you have, as well as how you can resolve each of these concerns.
