You should imagine that you have landed a job at either the Democratic National Committee or the Republican National Committee (you should choose one) as a political strategy researcher. You are part of a team that is building a campaign strategy plan for the 2024 general election cycle with the goal of maximizing your party’s national vote share in House, Senate and Presidential elections.
Your first task on the job is to research recent national voter trends and identify one group of voters to target for political messaging going into the 2024 election cycle. This could be a racial group, an age group, a group based on multiple background characteristics (like women with at least a bachelor’s degree, for example), etc.
Just make sure that you specify the group you think your party should target, and explain why this group is important to your party’s success in 2024. For example, did you choose this group because they already lean to your party, but their turnout could be higher? Did you choose them because they don’t overwhelmingly lean to either party, and you want to persuade them toward your party? Did you choose this group because you are worried your party is losing ground with them?
Beyond explaining why you chose your group of focus, you should also discuss the kind of messaging you believe is most likely to appeal to your chosen group.
