- Some people view increases in health care spending as a response to consumer demand, while others see these increases as potentially wasteful spending. When other industry sectors assume a rising share of gross domestic product (GDP), it is viewed as a positive development. Should we be concerned about the rising costsof health care and its share of GDP? What types of health care spending might be classified as valuable? As wasteful?
- Recently lawmakers have questioned the pricing structure of pharmaceuticals, especially when EpiPen® reached a price of $300 per dose and top executives in the drug companies were given bonuses. Then CVS, a large pharmacy, announced they were going to purchase AETNA, a large insurer. All of these headlines have caused the public to question the transparency of the pharmaceutical Industry. Discuss if there is any reason why the pharmaceutical companies should need to defend their business practices. After all, they are just trying make a buck.
