In what ways is EBP applied where you work or where you do clinicals?
EBP is applied in healthcare organizations in various ways, including using clinical practice guidelines, implementing evidence-based interventions, and using research to inform decision-making (Chien, 2019). In the clinical setting, nurses may participate in EBP by conducting literature reviews, utilizing EBP resources such as Cochrane Reviews, and participating in multidisciplinary teams to implement and evaluate the effectiveness of evidence-based interventions.

One example of a QI initiative is the toolkit created by a specialized pressure ulcer team at the Boston University School of Public Health. The program aimed to decrease the incidence of hospital-acquired pressure ulcers by implementing a bundle of evidence-based interventions, such as daily comprehensive skin assessments and pressure ulcer assessment, education for patients and staff about risk factors, and implementation of risk assessment scales in the adult population: the Norton Scale and the Braden Scale (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, n.d.). Once all assessments are completed, a care plan must be customized to the patient’s requirements. The plan must include diet, exercise, mobility, hydration, friction, shear, and specialized beds and mattresses (Agency for Healthcare Research and Quality, n.d.)

Evidence-based practice (EBP) analyzes, reviews, and translates the latest scientific evidence-based practice (Kelly, 2022). Additionally, this enables the nurse to develop goals more quickly for clinical practice to improve client care (Kelly, 2022). The development of evidence-based practice involves gathering all pertinent data that is credible and trustworthy, hence raising the standard of care.

For the past 14 years, I have worked with a pediatric cardiology group that believes that taking great care of patients every day and in every way is the best approach. This group strives to perform high-quality care for all their clients and the services that they provide are from a qualified group of healthcare professionals. Some of the ways that I noticed evidence-based practice was by using infection control, especially during the pandemic. I noticed that all the healthcare providers continuously washed their hands going from patient to patient and wearing the right personal protective equipment (PPE), as evidence shows that by using the mask you are “protecting your nose and mouth from exposure to splashes, sprays, splatter, and respiratory secretion” (CDC, 2020). By putting this practice into play you keep from spreading germs to patients when going from one room to another to examine the patients.

Quarterly the company has a company-wide meeting with all staff members to discuss how to better improve client care. Before the meeting, an email is sent to ask staff members as well as the doctors for feedback on how improvements can be made to provide the highest quality of care for our patients. Having a strong correlation between evidence-based practice and quality improvement enhances the quality of care for clients. Also, quality improvement is important when it comes to evidence-based practice. Furthermore, nurses and other healthcare professionals should be supported and provided with the right education and evidence-based practice to improve their quality of work, and a good work environment to be successful. The company also sends a survey to caregivers to give feedback on the quality of service, the staff, and overall experience. In the survey they are also given the opportunity to feedback on what they feel can be changed to make their experience better.
