Discussion Overview
In this discussion forum, you will consider interpersonal skills that are necessary to resolve a difficult situation in which conflict arises among members of the interdisciplinary team.

Step 1 Read the case scenario.
You are the leader of an inter-professional team who is reviewing a chest tube care protocol to determine if evidence-based best practices are being followed. As you meet with the group for the first time, you provide opportunities for group members to get to know each other. In this meeting, you also set out to determine the goals of the project and assign roles and responsibilities of each member of the team.
As the group is discussing who will be responsible for each of the tasks, Joel responds in a curt manner that he feels that he would do a better job with the task assigned to Mary than she would be able to do. Using a calm tone, Mary provides an explanation of her capabilities to perform the task effectively, given her experience with this task on another project. You agree with the decision to have Mary perform the task. Joel seems to be agitated by the decision, and he throws his hands up in the air, gets up from his seat, and leaves the room. You follow him out into the hall and ask him to calm down and come back in to the room to share his frustrations and concerns.
Step 2 Post a response to the discussion board.
In your response, address the following questions:
- Which interpersonal skills are necessary for you to use in this situation?
- How would the skills that you identified be beneficial in helping to resolve the conflict that is occurring?
- Consider the interpersonal skills that were lacking on Joel’s part. What are they? What could Joel have done differently to avoid creating this conflict?
- Describe a personal experience in which you needed to use interpersonal skills to assist in a difficult situation. What were the circumstances of the situation? What interpersonal skills were utilized to resolve the problem?
- Every discussion in this course requires documentation to support the statements you make. The level of evidence you use to support your statements is important and must be evident in each part of the discussion. Your textbook and the article you are asked to locate/read should always be used as evidence. The next level of evidence would be peer reviewed articles, and after that, well known web sites for example: CDC or the AHA. Avoid the use of blogs or obscure or non-healthcare related web sites, and Wikipedia.
