Peer 1:
What are the reasons many nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts?
There are many reasons why many nurses are not actively involved in lobbying efforts. One reason is that nurses are often very busy with their work and may need more time or energy to devote to political activism. A further obstacle to nurses participating in health policy-making is their lack of knowledge and expertise in policy evaluation and their lack of understanding of the principles that should guide the formation of health policies (Hajizadeh et al., 2021).
What actions can nurses take to encourage themselves and their peers to get involved politically and lobby for specific issues such as healthcare policy changes? Provide a detailed example.
To encourage nurses to get involved in politics and lobby for changes in health care policy, they can educate themselves about the political process and issues important to the nursing profession. This knowledge might include attending conferences or seminars on health care policy, reading related books and articles, and joining organizations focusing on health care policy.A detailed example is a group of nurses in a rural area who found it difficult for their patients to access primary care and specialists due to a shortage of providers. These nurses can educate themselves on the issue, research potential solutions and best practices in rural settings, and then form alliances with other healthcare providers and community leaders (ATI, 2019). They could then meet with their state legislators and representatives, testify at public hearings, submit written testimony, and consider organizing a grassroots campaign to raise awareness and support for expanding access to primary care and specialists in their area (ATI, 2019). In addition to this action, nurses can use social media and other digital platforms to raise awareness of critical healthcare issues and mobilize others to act. For example, nurses can use Facebook, Twitter, and Instagram to share information about healthcare policy changes and encourage others to contact their elected representatives.
Peer 2:What are the reasons many nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts?
Lobbying is defined as individuals that attempt to influence the government through either written or oral communication (Birdsong, 2021). Lobbying is also communicating your views on local, state, or national policy issues to your elected officials in a timely and effective manner (Spyder,2020). Major reasons why nurses do not actively engage in lobbying efforts are the barriers to participation. Some barriers are lack of involvement, lack of knowledge and skills, lack of support, negative image, enabling structures, and available resources (Shariff N., 2014).
What actions can nurses take to encourage themselves and their peers to get involved politically and lobby for specific issues such as healthcare policy changes? Provide a detailed example.
As caregivers, nurses have a great impact on patient care and their voices need to be heard. Nurses standing up for issues that are important makes it less likely for those competing for healthcare interests, the only ones being heard. Speaking up can help influence decision-makers to implement policies to improve working environments for nurses, which in turn also advocates for patients by improving patient care and outcome. Some actions nurses can participate in include voting; campaigning; attending rallies; volunteering; contacting elected officials; working with others on local problems or issues; and being a member of nursing or non-nursing organizations that take stands on political issues (Alhassan, et al.,2019).
