  • The first provision of the Code of Ethics for Nurses that may help me as I transition from an academic student to a newly graduated nurse in clinical practice is our commitment to protect and defend the welfare of all persons, especially those who are vulnerable (Dellasega & Kanaskie, 2021). The second provision that will help me in this transition is the duty to provide competent nursing care. Competent nursing care means taking responsibility for patient safety by knowing how to evaluate, plan and implement a nursing assessment and plan appropriate actions to deal with any significant health condition or problem that appears or develops during the course of your nursing care (Turner, 2018).
  • Adopting the commitment to protect and defend will help me be successful in my nursing career. As a new nurse, I will be caring for patients with varying levels of physical and psychiatric health issues, including individuals who need assistance with their medications; people with dementia who may wander away from their homes; homeless individuals who may be experiencing mental health crises; and children, who may present with complex physical or developmental conditions. My workplace, which is the hospital emergency department, is often a vulnerable place where many different cultures intersect and these patients experience high levels of pain due to injury or illness. As a nurse working in such a milieu, I should maintain a sensitivity that can be developed through these two provisions. On the other hand, adopting competent nursing into my clinical practice will help me to be successful by providing a systematic approach to applying knowledge, improving communication and collaboration skills and promoting self-care. Competent nursing will give me a greater understanding of patient-centered care. This will in turn empower me to provide accurate, timely and effective care to patients. It will also equip me with the skills necessary to identify, evaluate and manage both acute and chronic diseases such as diabetes management, cardiovascular disease treatment management or cancer treatment management.

  • The ANA’s Code of Ethics for Nurses aids many students in understanding what their role will become and how to perfect it. As a newly graduating nurse the two provisions that may aid me in my transition from an academic student to a nurse are provisions 4 and 5. “The nurse has authority, accountability and responsibility for nursing practice; makes decisions; and takes action consistent with the obligation to promote health and to provide optimal care” (Code of Ethics for Nurses, 2018). Provision 4 is crucial since it is your duty as a nurse to give your patients the finest care possible while also advocating and making the best possible decisions towards their care which also ties in with provision 3. To accomplish this and guarantee that our patient receives the finest care possible, we put into practice the ethical values we have previously learned. “The nurse owes the same duties to herself as to others, including the responsibility to promote health and safety, and preserve wholeness of character integrity. maintain competence. and continue personal and professional growth” (Code of Ethics for Nurses, 2018). The fifth provision is crucial because without taking care of yourself, you cannot take care of others. Given the long shifts and a new sense of responsibility, it is easy to feel too anxious, and therefore it’s crucial for everyone to give themselves time to adapt and de-stress.
