We’ve discussed declining trust in our public institutions here in the U.S. as well as the public’s increasing frustration with our (two-party dominated) political system. Whether you read leading political scientists or listen to the most popular political pundits, the general consensus is that significant reforms are needed to help restore the public’s faith in our core institutions.
For this assignment, you should write a brief essay that puts forward one reform of the way we elect some of our national representatives (to include U.S. House members, U.S. Senators and/or the President) and explain how that reform could help rebuild trust in institutions.
The guidelines for the assignment are:
- Identify a particular problem or weakness with the way we currently conduct national elections
- Identify a reform that might improve the problem/weakness you identified, and explain how it might help restore trust in institutions
- Briefly assess how difficult this reform would be to implement and any barriers that might arise
