DB WEEK 3:
In an effort to improve endurance, some athletes have blood drawn to stimulate the bone marrow to produce more red blood cells and then, just prior to the event, have the blood transfused back into the body to give them an increased number of circulating red cells and thus an increased capacity to carry oxygen which leads to increased endurance. The athlete is not using any performance-enhancing drugs, just artificially manipulating one of the body’s natural physiological processes. Should this be illegal? Why or why not? |
