Collaboration Café

Purpose

The purpose of the graded collaboration café is to engage students with their peers in an interactive dialogue to organize, integrate, apply, and critically appraise knowledge for nurse practitioner (NP) practice. Meaningful dialogue fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This collaboration café supports the professional formation of the nurse practitioner role. 

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes:

CO 4: Apply ethical and legal principles to the healthcare needs and management of acutely ill psychiatric mental health patients across the lifespan (PO 5)

Due Date

Initial posts are due to the discussion forum by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).

Preparing the Collaboration Café

Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the collaboration café. Contact your course faculty if you have questions.

General Instructions

The depiction of psychotherapy in pop culture is varied; movies, television, and other media often portray specific stereotypes of clients, counselors, therapy settings, and content. Locate a representation of psychotherapy in popular media. Suggestions include but are not limited to movies such as Good Will Hunting, Analyze This, A Beautiful Mind, or Antwon Fisher, and TV series including the Sopranos, Monk, Big Little Lies, or Mad Men. Your selection may include a positive or negative depiction of therapy and may or may not be realistic.

  1. Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.
    1. Describe the psychotherapy setting portrayed in the selected movie or series.
    2. Describe the stereotypes that are portrayed in the therapeutic relationship, setting, or content of the therapy sessions.
    3. Describe the relationship depicted between the psychotherapist and the client. Does the provider demonstrate professionalism, ethical comportment, and/or therapeutic communication in client interactions? Explain your rationale.
    4. Discuss the ways, if any, that any element related to ethnicity, religion, race, class, or cultural identity appeared to impact the client-therapist relationship.
    5. Explain how popular culture depictions of mental health treatment, specifically psychotherapy depictions, might impact the client and psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) perceptions of psychotherapy as an effective treatment modality.
  1. Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: Engage peers by asking questions, and offering new insights, applications, perspectives, information, or implications for practice:
    1. Respond to at least one peer.
    2. Respond to a second peer.
    3. Communicate using respectful, collegial language and terminology appropriate to advanced nursing practice.
  2. Professionalism in Communication: Communicate with minimal errors in English grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation.
  3. Wednesday Participation Requirement: Provide a substantive response to the collaboration café topic (not a response to a peer), by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week.
  4. Total Participation Requirement: Provide at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic and two to student peers) on two different days during the week.
