Transcript for the Discussion Prompt
Hello, this brief audio commentary centers on the Discussion question. Each Discussion prompt should have a short explanation, 6-8 sentences. The questions are open ended. I am looking for your best possible explanation. I am not looking for a summary, rather write your discussion that engages the prompts, include quotes and evidence. Remember to write in-text citations and works cited in your response.
This week’s Discussion centers on the idea of “being and becoming.” Here, in the introduction to Becoming Mexican American, Sanchez borrows the idea from Stuart Hall. Hall is asking us to think about how historical events and the context in which they happen, inform the formation of identity. When we think about “being and becoming,” Halls is asking us to think about a process, a process that encompasses a historical moment, but in addition, Hall is making the observation that the process creates change. In other words, historical moments, although we may think of them as static, historical moments create change, doing away with the static.
