For this assignment you are to take a stand on one of the controversial issues we covered during this unit: Book Banning

Your Topic: SYNTHESIS ESSAY

Assignment Details: For this assignment you are to take a stand on one of the controversial issues we covered during this unit: Book Banning, Tuition-Free Public Universities, Social Media, Standardized Testing, Lowering the Voting Age, Call Out or Cancel Culture, Condom Distribution in the Public School Sector.  In order to thoroughly examine the issue, you will adopt a comparison/contrast synthesis mode of development in your essay. By comparing and contrasting, you perform a multifaceted analysis that often suggests subtleties that otherwise might not have come to your attention.

Specifically, select at least three credible sources that address one of the issues covered in class.  Then carefully read each source to discover significant criteria for analysis. Criteria are specific points to which each of the authors refer in making their various arguments and about which they will disagree. After having compared and contrasted each of the sources based on the criteria you identify–i.e., weighing the pros and cons of the issue–you will then indicate which side of the issue you fall on and why.

SUGGESTED ORGANIZATIONAL STRUCTURE:

I.INTRODUCTION

II.  BODY

A. CRITERION A

1. SOURCE ONE’S VIEW

2. SOURCE TWO’S VIEW

3. SOURCE THREE’S VIEW

B. CRITERION B

1. SOURCE ONE’S VIEW

2. SOURCE TWO’S VIEW

3. SOURCE THREE’S VIEW

C. CRITERION C

1. SOURCE ONE’S VIEW

2. SOURCE TWO’S VIEW

3. SOURCE THREE’S VIEW

(If you are unable to provide three sources per criterion, that is okay.  However, strive for three if at all possible.)

D. WHICH SIDE YOU FALL ON AND WHY REFERENCING BACK TO YOUR SOURCES FOR SUPPORT

III.CONCLUSION

                                                      MORE CLARIFICATION ON THE SYNTHESIS:

This is a research-oriented paper; however, it is not a typical argumentative research paper (as our last paper will be, the Multi-Source argument), where you provide your reader with a thesis that indicates your stance on the issue, then throughout your body paragraphs substantiate your claims via credible sources.  With the synthesis paper, you will provide your reader with a thesis that indicates to your reader that before you can provide a determination on the issue, you must weigh the pros and cons.   In the body of your paper, you will do just that: weigh the pros and cons on the issue.  The paper will be organized based on various criteria, points each side will broach, but will disagree on, in making their arguments on the topic.  For instance, if you were discussing the topic of legalizing marijuana nationwide (this will not be one of the approved topics.  I am just using this an example here), both sides would probably focus on the health/medical aspects of legalizing marijuana (one criterion).  One side might say that there are copious health benefits to legalizing marijuana, making it readily available to individuals, while the other side, focusing on this criterion as well, would say the polar opposite, that marijuana would have deleterious effects on one’s health.  Another criterion that each side might showcase is the economy as it relates to legalizing marijuana.  One side might say that there would be a positive effect on the economy, generating great tax revenues, while the other side might say that yes that may be true, but the surplus of taxes would go to paying for ER visits, addiction facilities, etc.  So on and so on, you would continue organizing your essay based on various criteria that each side would discuss. During this section, you will simply reveal what is said by the sources.  It’s as if you are at a coffee shop listening to a conversation about the legalization of marijuana, not weighing in on the discussion  until you feel you’ve been appropriately educated on the topic, Finally, toward the end of your paper, you will weigh in on the topic, offering your stance on the issue.  At this point in the game, you will reference those points made by your sources (coffee shop buds), that swayed you to your position on the issue: for or against the legalization of marijuana.  The section should be a couple of pages or so.  Then you proceed to your conclusion where you sum everything up.
