Collaboration Café

Purpose

The purpose of the graded collaboration café is to engage students with their peers in an interactive dialogue to organize, integrate, apply, and critically appraise knowledge for psychiatric mental health nurse practitioner (PMHNP) practice. Meaningful dialogue fosters the development of a learning community as ideas, perspectives, and knowledge are shared. This collaboration café supports the professional formation of the nurse practitioner role.   

Course Outcomes

This assignment enables the student to meet the following course outcomes: 

CO 1: Apply advanced practice nursing knowledge to collecting health history information and examination findings for psychiatric mental health patients across the lifespan. (POs 1, 2)

CO 2: Adapt health history and mental status examination to the developmental, gender-related, age-specific, and special population needs of the individual patient. (POs 1, 2)

Due Date

Initial posts are due to the discussion forum by Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Peer responses are due by Sunday at 11:59 p.m. MT. Students must post on a minimum of two separate days. A 10% late penalty will be imposed for discussions posted after the deadline Wednesday at 11:59 p.m. MT, regardless of the number of days late. NOTHING will be accepted after 11:59 p.m. MT on Sunday (i.e., the student will receive an automatic 0).

This assignment is worth 80 points. 

Preparing the Assignment

Follow these guidelines when completing each component of the collaboration café. Contact your course faculty if you have questions. 

General Directions: 

Read the following scenario. In your initial post, respond to each of the questions below.  

You are preparing to initiate a telepsychiatric videoconferencing session with Jarrett, a 16-year-old client who has recently been diagnosed with major depressive disorder, severe without psychotic features (F32.2)  following a suicide attempt. After a week of inpatient care, Jarrett returned home. He lives in a 2-bedroom apartment in a subsidized affordable housing development with his mother, stepfather, and two younger brothers. His father is currently not involved in his life. He and his siblings attend school virtually.   

Include the following sections: 

  1. Application of Course Knowledge: Answer all questions/criteria with explanations and detail.  
  1. Describe the ideal setting for your visit. What is or is not suitable to have in your workspace?  
  2. How will you guide Jarrett in preparing his space for the session?
  3. How will you obtain consent? Who must consent to treatment?
  4. What additional requirements apply to adolescent telepsychiatry?
  5. How might you assess the impact of the social determinants of health on Jarrett’s treatment plan?
  6. How will you create a safety plan for Jarrett? Who should be involved in the plan? 
  7. Engagement in Meaningful Dialogue: Engage peers by asking questions, and offering new insights, applications, perspectives, information, or implications for practice: 
  1. Respond to at least one peer.  
  2. Respond to a second peer.  
  3. Communicate using respectful, collegial language and terminology appropriate to advanced nursing practice. 
  1. Professionalism in Communication: Communicate with minimal errors in English grammar, spelling, syntax, and punctuation.  
  2. Wednesday Participation Requirement: Provide a substantive response to the collaboration café topic (not a response to a peer), by Wednesday, 11:59 p.m. MT of each week. 
  3. Total Participation Requirement: Provide at least three substantive posts (one to the initial question or topic and two to student peers) on two different days during the week.
