Systems Theory and the Family System Approach
System theory is the idea that we are all a part of many different systems and must be looked at as a
whole to optimize any counseling. Historically, school counselors have had one-on-one counseling within
the schools with the student, and if it couldn’t be resolved in this meeting, the counselor would have a
parent come in for a conference. Often when a student has problems at school, there is an underlying
problem within the family system that needs to be addressed. If only one parent comes to the meeting, a
piece of the system needs to be included. When the parent conference fails to fix the situation, there may
be a referral to a separate child study team or an outside professional counselor (Kraus, 1998). This is all
assuming the problem is with the child.
Often the counselor will know there is a problem at home, but there is nothing in place to address that
situation. When looking at the parts of the family system, it is essential to reduce tensions among the
members and meet the needs of the individual members to have a healthy, cohesive family system
(Kraus, 1998). The current system’s failings are causing a movement toward education and school
counseling reform. If there is a way to get the entire family on board and support both the student and the
student’s family, we will go a long way in building the framework of a better future for our students and the
whole family. This new structure should be a family systems approach. Studies show that the results are
better and faster once the entire family is involved in the process and a problem-solving approach is used
(Kraus, 1998). The counselor would be trained to assess the family and develop a plan to help the family
on their pathway to wellness.
Being a parent with children in public schools from 2003 – 2019, I was lucky enough to be in a system that
did support the family system. My oldest daughter is bipolar, and before she was diagnosed, we went
through years of meetings with the school. They helped us stay on top of her schooling, and I believe she
may not have graduated without the support we received. I’m sure the reform has not taken place in all
school systems, but change is happening, and with more and more school counselors being given the
best training, we are making progress in our schools.
