Module 4: Discussion Forum
Developmental Case Study: Helena
Helena is thirteen years old and exhibiting signs that she may be suffering from an eating disorder. Her parents are concerned for her and in need of education and advice related to their daughter. Begin by reviewing this week’s assigned textbook readings relative to eating disorders. Then, from the perspective of a Human Service professional (of your choice) working with this family, describe how you will help Helena, her parents, and her siblings. Feel free to use the following prompts in your discussion, or use an approach not listed here. Please be sure to stay rooted in the research you have read thus far in your Initial Post.
- Describe what you would say to Helena’s mother (“Leigh”) and father (“Dean”) to help them understand the two most common eating disorders, bulimia and anorexia nervosa.
- Share the information you learned from your chosen research article and explain how it relates to Helena’s case.
- Consider what advice you would give Leigh, Dean, and Helena. For example, at what point should Helena receive a professional evaluation, and who can provide that service?
- Finally, provide a link to a resource you can provide to Helena’s parents that will assist their efforts to support their daughter. (Consider a non-profit organization in your surrounding area or a national organization you might discover online.)
Be sure to craft your post as though you are the Human Services worker. Consider the options you have before you in helping Helena and her parents manage her case. When you respond to the initial posts of your colleagues in class, you should again assume the role of a Human Services caseworker and discuss the options offered. This gives you all the opportunity to discuss real-world situations in the field.
In your response to colleagues, discuss the different approaches other people have. Perhaps you will find varying opinions about this topic; if you do, feel free to have a little healthy and creative debate.
Your initial posting should be 250-500 words and must be submitted by Thursday, midnight (MT), of this week. By Sunday at midnight (MT), respond to two or more of your classmates’ initial posts in one of the following ways:
- Build on something interesting or provocative that your classmate wrote.
- Explain why and how you see things differently.
- Ask a probing or clarifying question.
- Share your understanding of your classmate’s posting in your words.
- Offer and support an opinion with peer-reviewed sources or industry best-practices.
- Expand on your classmate’s posting by providing constructive feedback.
Keep in mind that you’re expected to engage critically and not editorially. Engage the material and cite, using APA(Links to an external site.), where necessary.
