The COVID-19 pandemic highlighted the need for alternative ways to receive healthcare, and telehealth emerged as a potential solution. While telehealth has been around for some time, it hasn’t been widely utilized until recently. However, due to its effectiveness in providing healthcare access to patients in the United States and globally, there have been positive changes in policies to encourage its adoption. An example of such a policy is the Advancing Telehealth Beyond COVID-19 Act, which was developed and passed by the U.S. government (Drake et al., 2020). This act allows Medicare patients to receive care from healthcare providers across the country (Rutledge et al., 2014). Using telehealth technology has numerous positive effects on nursing practice. One major advantage is that it helps overcome physical obstacles to receiving care. Specifically, patients living in rural areas often face challenges when trying to access healthcare services. However, with telehealth, these patients can easily schedule appointments with healthcare providers. Additionally, telehealth enables convenient patient follow-up, leading to improved patient outcomes. This is especially beneficial for managing chronic diseases like diabetes and cancer, which require lifestyle modifications as part of the treatment plan. Continuous monitoring of data is crucial in these cases, and telehealth technology allows for remote monitoring and real-time information sharing through connected devices. As a result, nurses can easily follow up with patients. This technology eliminates geographical barriers that hinder access to care, enhances patient flexibility, and enables round-the-clock patient monitoring (M. Al Hemairy et al., 2018).
