What are the benefits and pitfalls of comparing religious traditions? What can comparison help us see?
Brent Musberger says, “In the south, college football is a religion.” Do you agree? Why or why not? Please note I’m not asking you your favorite sport, I’m not claiming college football isn’t loved in other areas, and I’m not saying other sports aren’t loved in the south. Metaphorically, anything that has a huge following could be substituted here, but I enjoy college football. I’m asking you to compare, in this case, elements of college football with elements of religion to determine if you believe the statement to be a legitimate metaphor.
