Healthcare disparities adversely affect adults with intellectual disabilities experiencing comorbidities. With the advancement of medicine and improvements in the early diagnosis of disease/conditions, the life expectancy of adults with intellectual disabilities (IDD) has increased. However, adults with IDD lifespan are commonly twenty years shorter than adults with no IDD. (Ress & Northway, 2022).
Describe your interest in the topic.
My interest in the topic is to find solutions to improve health access and elevate the quality of care available to individuals with intellectual disabilities. Thus, improving health outcomes. Nurses are patients’ advocates, and to have a positive outcome that brings about improved access to patients, families, and communities is a legacy I would like to leave behind.

I currently work as the Lead RN for two group homes facilities servicing individuals with Intellectual disabilities. I have witnessed firsthand the calamity of the care available and provided to this population.
