we have critically analyzed how visual images, both in print and in mass media, can construct certain gender and racial discourses
Here are the guidelines. Please read them carefully and follow them:
- Your essay should be about two to three pages in length (going a bit beyond three pages is fine). No outside research is required.
- You must reference at least 3 different assigned readings that we have covered in class between Week 8 and Week 15 as support for your arguments. You do not need to provide formal citations. You can just mention the authors and/or titles of the readings within the text (e.g. “According to”). If you cite specific passages from any of the readings, please list the author and page number after the quote (e.g. “Williamson, pg. 112”).
- Be specific. Support and prove your arguments by providing examples and referencing readings throughout your essay.
- This is a formal essay so please avoid using the first-person voice. You need to end a brief introductory paragraph with a thesis statement for the essay.
- In formulating your thesis, make sure that it addresses the question.
- Write a short conclusion that summarizes your major points. For more tips, please consult the Guidelines for Writing a Paper that I put together for you. This document appears at the end of the syllabus and as a sub-module as part of Course Information under the Content tab.
Final Exam Question: Throughout the second half of this semester, we have critically analyzed how visual images, both in print and in mass media, can construct certain gender and racial discourses and, in turn, marginalize various groups of individuals. At the same time, though, we have also explored the ways in which those who have had visual representations imposed on them have responded by working to recreate their own identities and challenging existing portrayals. For this essay, please discuss the ways in which alternative or counter visual narratives have been constructed by certain individuals and/or communities. Please cite a minimum of 3 different assigned readings from Week 8 to Week 15 in this class to support your arguments.
