Discuss the importance of Western influence on 20th-century Chinese art, focusing on the issue of “influence and response

8 Page Final Paper Assignment

Topic/Subject (the “what”): Discuss the importance of Western influence on 20th-century Chinese art, focusing on the issue of “influence and response.” (1) Define “influence” and “response.” (2) Discuss the Chinese stylistic response to the influence of modern western art. (3) Consider how the style of Chinese art changed due to Western influence, demonstrated in your case analysis. (4) Think about the social, cultural, and even mentality changes in your case study, and pay attention to the changes of style in accordance with the subject matter of artwork.

Method (the “how”): To discuss this subject, choose one work of art by a 20th-century Chinese artist from our class PPT, and apply the theories of “influence” and “response” to your case analysis. Please find the relevant theories and references in the following two essays:

(1) this essay provides further information on the “theories”:

https://www.academia.edu/53274244/Meta_Art_History_Introduction_to_a_Narratological_Study_of_Art_History

(2) this essay offers a grand narrative of “western influence and Chinese response” with some specific cases, which are for you to use as examples:

With your research, you MUST go beyond the above two reference sources, which should be listed at the end of your paper.

How to write the paper?

Comparison: Since this assignment is about influence and response, your paper MUST be comparative, comparing western artworks and a Chinese art work. Based on your close reading of the chosen Chinese work, you can first compare the style, find out the commonalities, similarities, and differences in relation to the subject of the selected work. Then, discuss the significance of your findings. For this comparison, you need to do extensive research, such as looking into the relevant works in Western art. Which Western art work/s to be used for comparison? It comes from your research.

Viewpoint: With the comparison, you must make a point, which could be an issue for debate or argument. You MUST offer sufficient analyses of the chosen artwork and convincing interpretations to support your opinion.

Title: Although I give you the subject to discuss, you give your paper a title that directly states your topic/opinion and approach. Don’t title it “Final Paper,” and don’t use the same title of the artwork as the title of your paper. If you wish, you can use a subtitle to indicate “what” and “how.”

Note: As for your research, you could consult with and quote from other scholars and provide clear reference information. Since there are lots of materials online, you MUST strictly follow the instruction about the “subject” (what) and “method” (how). Otherwise, an off-topic paper could be considered suspicious and then have difficulty to pass.

Suggestions for composition:

a. Introduction: state your subject/topic, identify the issue, and state your method (approach), 1 page;

b. Main text: develop your discussions step by step, make an argument based on your close reading of the artworks (case analyses), 6-8 pages;

c. Conclusion: draw an opinion/idea from your discussions. There should be a correspondence between the Conclusion and Introduction, such as questions (in the Introduction) and answers (in the Conclusion), 1 page.

Reminder/suggestions:

1. To make your writing clear, you may give headings or sub-headings to each part of the main text, indicating what you discuss in that part;

2. List about 5 keywords in mind, indicating your topic and sub-topics. When you conceptualize and write the paper, always keep the keywords in mind, and ask yourself if you have gone astray from your topic which is indicated by the keywords.

Requirements:

a. Length: 8-10 pages, double space, plus illustrations and reference page.

b. Illustrations should be attached to the end of the paper, do not insert in the text.

c. Style: scholarly research paper, academic writing.

d. Reference: 5-10 items, in MLA, Chicago, or APA style.
