After a successful speech, the audience’s feelings are UPLIFTED. This type of
speech is often given at a graduation commencement, a celebration, or a social
gathering. In the US, in your lifetime you are more likely to give a eulogy (a
commemoration in honor of one deceased) than any other kind of speech.
Part 1: Your Commemorative Speech Topic
II. Pick a topic that all of us can commemorate and appreciate. Simple
things that are often underappreciated make good topics for this
assignment. You can pick a topic on an object (e.g., toilet papers,
keys, doors, utensils, shoes, etc.), an event (e.g., Dipsea race, Pride
Parade, Thanksgiving, Women March, etc.), an idea (e.g., love,
friendship, American Dream, etc.), an organization (e.g., SF 49ers, SF
Giants, Apple Company, British Monarchy, etc.), or a place (e.g., San
Francisco, Golden Gate Bridge, Coit Tower, etc.). A topic on a
person is not allowed.
III. Include three main points stating reasons/strengths/positive qualities
the topic should be commemorated. This Body content needs to be
NEW information that our class level does not already know. Research
your topic and include at least two source citations.

I. Its rich history of invention and designs (Why a Pencil is Perfect
II. It is symbolic.
A. A speech is like a pencil, it has to have a point (Ayres, 2004)
B. The attached eraser does not only symbolizes the mistakes we
make in life but also our willingness to correct them.
III. The variety of usages (e.g., drawing, taking notes, nonverbal
communication/identity, unusual uses of pencils, etc.)
