Instructions
This is a group discussion where you solve ALL FOUR problems for your group.
Problem Set:
Problem 1
Imagine that you are floating at the beach within the surf zone. You notice that the
longshore current and resulting transport change direction (for example, from
northward to southward) throughout the day. Based on your knowledge of shoreline
processes, explain how this is possible?
Problem 2
Specify the characteristics and coastal features that differentiate erosional and
depositional shores.
Problem 3
- Using the North American on figure 1, what is the relationship between the
proximity to plate tectonic boundaries and the width of the continental
shelf? - What is the relationship between the width of the continental shelf and the
width of the coastal plain? - Regarding the two types of coast (erosional and depositional). Where
would you find each of those on North America? - Why are there no barrier islands on the west coast?
Problem 4
This sequence of photos shows the coast from Capitola Beach to New Brighton
State Park located in Monterey Bay. Look at the photographs carefully and answer
the following questions:
- What is the direction of the longshore current and drift in this
section of the coast inside Monterey Bay? Explain how you
came to your answer. - Why was the breakwater built south of the Capitola Pier?
- What signs of erosion do you see south of the breakwater on
the sea cliffs? - Are there signs of man made structures to prevent erosion of
the sea cliffs?
Capitola beach is situated between the Capitola Pier and north of the breakwater
that you see on the first photo below.
