According to Who.int (2023), almost 422 million people worldwide have diabetes, and majority of them are living in low- and middle-income households. Diabetes is a chronic, metabolic disease characterized by elevated levels of blood glucose. Elevated levels of blood glucose can lead to serious complications involving heart and kidney damage, thickening of blood vessels, nerve injury, foot damage, and irreversible eye damage. People may experience excessive thirst, fatigue, hunger, sweating, nausea, vomiting, and in some cases blurred vision and rapid heart rate. Type 2 diabetes, is the most common type of diabetes, usually found in adults who have become insulin resistant, or they do not make an adequate amount of insulin. Type 1 diabetes, also known as juvenile diabetes, is insulin dependent in which the pancreas does not make insulin or produces too little. Juvenile diabetes is typically found in children and adolescence; there is no cure, and the exact cause is unknown. Gestational diabetes occurs during pregnancy and those who develop gestational diabetes are at high risk of developing type 2 diabetes in the future. These women are unable to produce enough insulin and placental hormones usually raise blood glucose levels during pregnancy.
I was personally affected by type 1 diabetes last year. I went for a checkup with my internal medicine doctor and was told my A1C was 8.6 and that I was a diabetic. Type 1 diabetes can be managed and treated with medication, diet, exercise, and insulin therapy (CDC.gov, 2022). I was given an option to take Metformin ER 500mg 24hr tabs daily, which is classified as a biguanide. It works by inhibiting glucose production in the liver, reduces glucose absorption in the gut, and it sensitizes insulin receptors in fat and skeletal muscles (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). Metformin is an oral agent that is slowly absorbed from the small intestines, and it is not metabolized. Metformin can help drop blood sugar to normal levels, but not solely without a healthy diet, physical activity, and in some cases weight loss (Rosenthal & Burchum, 2021). I decided not to take the Metformin and started a low carb diet with daily exercise. In 10 weeks, my A1C went from 8.6 to 6.9 and I am committed to have a healthy lifestyle. There is no cure for diabetes, but it can be reversed to a point where medication is not needed, and the body will not suffer from ill effects from having high blood sugar.
