Assignment Overview

This assignment is to get you thinking about quality and what you would expect if you were going to leave your most precious item in the care of someone. This week I want you to take what you have learned about nonparental childcare and find a spot to put your most precious item, your child. Even if you do not have one, I want you to put yourself into the role of a parent and explore the process of finding someone to care for your child. In the attached assignment guideline, you will find the directions and child scenario you will be conducting your childcare search for. This assignment is worth 10 points to research one childcare option for your child, but you have the opportunity to earn 5 points of extra credit by researching up to two more opportunities (2.5 points per extra site). This assignment is due by end of week 8 (March 26).

Childcare Search Assignment

(10points)
Instructions: For this assignment, you will take the role of a parent/guardian and conduct a childcare
search based on the information in the scenario below. You will need to gather information for one, two
or three childcare centers. [Full credit for one site researched, you can receive up to 5 point extra credit
for researching up to two other sites (2.5points for each extra site researched)]
Scenario:
You have a 1-year-old child who was diagnosed with cystic fibrosis. You and your partner work at part
time jobs and have some flexibility to arrange schedules so you will not need care full time (5 days a
week 6-8 hours per day). Unfortunately, you do not have any family living near that can help care for
your child while you are at work. You can only afford to pay $850 per month for childcare.
Please include the following in your write-up:
Part I: Give the information for all sites you choose to research
• Name of Childcare Center:
• Address:
• Phone Number:
• Ages Served:
• Weekly tuition rates for a full- time and a part- time spot for all the ages they serve:
• Are they accredited (NAEYC)?
• Do they accept assistance programs (CDA, YMCA, CalWorks, etc.)? If yes, what do they accept?
• Do they accept children with identified disabilities such as cystic fibrosis, what other disabilities
will they service if not able to be fully inclusive?
Part II: Please answer the following questions after you complete your research for the sites
researched and you provide all the information listed above for each site.
• How difficult or easy was this search? Why?
• How did you feel while conducting this search? Why?
• How can finding childcare create stress on a family?
• What were some of the obstacles you encountered when looking for care?
• How can the quality of childcare impact a child and their family?
• How can childcare impact family dynamics? What are the possible consequences to the child?
