Use the “Elements of a Short Story” document and the “Characterization” handout to help you analyze the different characters
1. Use the “Elements of a Short Story” document and the “Characterization” handout to help you analyze the different characters created by Mena in the short stories assigned in this Module. Then referring to your handout notes pick TWO characters to write about; they can be from different stories. Write an 9-12 sentence description of each character, including one or two short quotes. Your description should tell us what you think we are supposed to think of the character. What kind of person is he or her? What is his or her function in the story? Are we supposed to like him/her or dislike him/her?
2. Pick any story assigned in this Module and try to explain the message of the story in 3 to 5 sentences. What is the story’s point? (Not what is it about (this is just plot/details of the events happening. You need to tell me what is its point or message.) Make sure you identify the story you are referring to.
3. Go over the different types of CONFLICTS that are developed in a short story (self vs self, self vs society, self vs other, etc – see handout). Discuss what kinds of conflict are occurring in “John of God the Water Carrier,” “The Emotions of Maria Concepcion,” and one third Mena story of your choosing. Support your response by referring to specific quotes or moments in the stories. (10 sentence minimum)
Requirements: 20-25 sentences
